Android is nipping at Apple’s heels in the tablet market

t-mobile-tablets
Following strong shipments of Android tablets and “robust demand” for Apple’s (AAPL) new iPad mini, analysts with IDC have increased their 2012 forecast for the worldwide tablet market to 122.3 million, compared to earlier estimates of 117.1 million units. The research firm also raised forecasts for 2013 and 2016 to 172.4 million units and 282.7 million, an increase from 165.9 million and 261.4 million units, respectively. IDC estimates that Android will continue its growth in the tablet space and see its worldwide market share increase from 39.8% in 2011 to 42.7% in 2012. During the same period the firm predicts that Apple will see its tablet share fall from 56.3% to 53.8%, while Windows-based tablets, including Windows 8 and Windows RT, are expected to grow from 1% to 2.9%. The Cupertino-based company is expected to continue its lead through 2016 with a 49.7% share of the tablet market, compared to Android’s 39.7% share and Windows 10.3% share.
Tablet Market Share
“The breadth and depth of Android has taken full effect on the tablet market as it has for the smartphone space,” said Ryan Reith, program manager for IDC’s Mobile Device Trackers. “Android tablet shipments will certainly act as the catalyst for growth in the low-cost segment in emerging markets given the platform’s low barrier to entry on manufacturing. At the same time, top-tier companies like Samsung, Lenovo, and ASUS are all launching Android tablets with comparable to premium products, but offered at much lower price points.”
IDC’s increased tablet forecasts come at the expense of eReaders. The firm notes that while front-lit eReaders have captured interest from consumers, most buyers are gravitating more towards multi-use tablets. IDC expects eReader shipments in 2012 to max out at 19.9 million units, down from 27.7 million in 2011.

Galaxy S3 based point-and-shoot 16MP Camera

Samsung working on a Galaxy S3 based point-and-shoot 16MP Camera

Samsung Camera

Samsung is working on a Galaxy S III-based point-and-shoot camera. The convergence device called Samsung Galaxy S camera features the trademark 4.8" SuperAMOLED screen and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Yes, it does sound a bit too good to be true, but let's dream for a moment and here what our tipster has to say about this camera he claims to have seen with his own eye two weeks ago.

The Samsung Galaxy S camera is described as a Galaxy S III glued to the back of a point-and-shoot camera, with no physical buttons on the back. It is reportedly 1.5 to 2 times thicker than an S III, but that seems too little given the rumored 10x zoom. The camera will feature a 16MP sensor of unkown size, a pop-out Xenon flash and a curved right side to help with the ergonomics.

Nexus 7

It seems like people really do love 7" tablets priced at $200 and branded by known companies (Google & Amazon) because word has it that retail partners have already begun reporting that the Google Nexus 7 is sold out.

According to a Reuters report, GameStop, Staples, Sam's Club, Office Depot, and Walmart have all listed the tablet as sold out. And, keep in mind that the Nexus 7 still hasn't officially hit store shelves, these are all pre-orders.

nexus 7

Supposedly, GameStop has actually already run through its first two allocations of the tablet, and won't be seeing its third allocation arrive until August. And, as of today, the websites for Staples, Sam's Club, Walmart, and Office Depot are all listing the tablet as being out of stock. This all happening before the tablet has even officially gotten a street date.

Nexus 5 Phone is Very Curved

Nexus 5 Phone is Curved, Very Curved…

Designer Sph1re from Deviantart has created the next Nexus Phone concept, which he calls the Nexus 5. We’re dealing with a very rounded and curved handset here, both in profile and edges. It’s shaped like an hourglass and I am extremely curious how such a model would feel in the user’s hand.
Nexus 5 Phone is Curved, Very Curved...
As you can see, the Nexus 5 phone runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, it has 3 capacitive buttons, classic for Android and a camera at the back with flash. WiFi and LTE should be available, as well as NFC and maybe the rumored quad core Snapdragon processor. There’s also a special lid at the back bottom area, that maybe hides the microSIM and microSD card slots. Seeing that this model is so curved and thin, it looks very fragile and there’s something about it that screams HTC and somehow… Alcatel?! The front camera integration doesn’t quite convince me, since it’s too close to the edge, but other than that I’m happy with this design. It may be a bit too curved to feel like a serious smartphone and it may look a bit too playful. However, I think it’s a breath of fresh air, with all those rectangles out there.

Samsung Galaxy Note II release date

Samsung Galaxy Note II to be announced August 30 at the IFA expo in Berlin with an Unpacked event

http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/article/32222-image/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-to-be-announced-August-30-at-the-IFA-expo-in-Berlin-with-an-Unpacked-event.jpg

After the Samsung Galaxy S III was already announced, shipped to carriers, and in the hands of consumers in a very short amount of time, now we have turned to the next great thing expected from Samsung this year - the Galaxy Note II.

While speculation has been rampant about it - from "just a supersized S III", to having a flexible display - the consensus seems to be it will have a larger, maybe 5.5" screen, than the current Note, yet be a tad more compact, due to some bezel shenanigans. Quad-core Exynos is a given, and there are rumors about a 12MP camera, but if history is any indication, Samsung will most likely put its 8MP shooter from the S III there.

When are we going to see it hit the streets, though? Well, rumors were for an announcement as soon as next month, and sales in September, beating the iPhone 5 rush (though these two are not exactly in the same category), and now a report from the Korean DDaily says Samsung will hold an event August 30, on the eve of the IFA electronics expo in Berlin.

These Unpacked events have become a hallmark for important new product launches for Samsung since last year, so we are expecting nothing short of the Galaxy Note II there. Last year the IFA expo show the Note announced at an Unpacked event right at its onset, so we can safely assume the same thing happening now with the Note II.

iPad mini

According to thinkios source, Apple's iPad Mini will have a 7-inch screen, and will be 5.3-inch wide and 7.87-inch long. For the sake of comparison, the new iPad is 9.50-inches tall, 7.31-inches wide, and has a depth of 0.37-inches.

iPad mini

The new info is the size as the iPad Mini is shown to be just 0.29" (7.3mm) thin, almost as slender as the iPod touch, which will make it the slimmest slate on the market. It is also allegedly 5.3" (134.7mm) wide and 7.87" (200mm) tall.

iPad mini

Unlike Google's Nexus 7, the new iPad Mini will feature a rear camera as well as a front camera for Facetime. It is unknown at this point of time whether the device will have a 5-megapixel camera like the new iPad or will carry a VGA camera just like the iPod touch 4th generation and iPad 2.
